RV Dealer Tank Handle story
For those of you interested in the story I mention in my previous post here we go.
Characters:
Service Guy - Awesome guy that we've usually dealt with.
Parts Guy - Gruff, no customer service skills, shouldn't be dealing with the public.
Parts Lady - Very nice, helpful but reports to the Parts Guy. Poor woman.
Preface: Somewhere on the way back from Michigan the handle for the black water tank fell off and I really needed to get a new one. I searched online but none of the standard ones they sell on Amazon and other places looked like they would fit, so I set off to the RV dealer to have them order one.
RV Dealer Trip 1:
We walk into the RV Dealer and head over to the parts an service desk. "Hey Service Guy! How have things been? Hey can you help me? I'm looking for a handle for my Black tank, mine fell off somewhere on I-80." I say.
"Good to see you AJ, You'll have to check with parts guy. He should be able to help you out." service guy replied.
I then walk over to parts guy and say, "Good afternoon parts guy, I'm looking for a replacement handle for my black tank. I think you'll have to order one since I've looked all over online and can't find one that looks like it'll fit."
"Bah, there all the same for every trailer we sell. Go buy one from our store." , he grumbled.
"I don't think that is correct, but hey, I'll give it a try and if it doesn't work like I'm pretty sure it won't I'll be back." I replied. I then purchased a $2 tank handle from their store that was just like the ones on Amazon. Of course, it didn't fit.
I was traveling for work a lot over the next couple of weeks so I asked Karen to drop by and have them order one. I told her to give him the model number of the trailer etc.
RV Dealer Trip 2:
"Hello Mr. Parts guy. My husband came in here last week and asked you to order a tank handle and you told him the ones from your store would fit. That is not the case and we need you to order one please." Karen said
"No. All trailers have the same handle. We sell them in the store for $2, Maybe you got a bad one." parts guy grunted.
"Here is the phone with my husband on the line, please tell that to him." Karen says as she hands him the phone.
"They are not the same and I need you to order...", I said over the phone before either losing the connection or more likely being hung up on.
A few minutes later I get Karen back on the phone. She tells me that he thinks the handle we got was just stripped and gave her another from the store.
RV Dealer Trip 3:
I get back from traveling, take off the handle from one of the other tanks on the trailer and proceed to the RV dealer.
"Parts guy! This is the 3rd time we've been in here about this handle. This is what it looks like. This is what you keep trying to pass off on us. They are not the same. Please order one. Our trailer is an X Model Y etc." I said.
Service guy sitting off to the side interjects, "Parts guy, they have a fifth wheel trailer and those have a different system and thus different handles. You'll have to order one for them."
"Thanks Service guy!", I said.
Parts guy growls, "I'll have to order you one. Be a couple bucks and take about a week."
"Make it three!", I said. "I'd like to keep some spares around so I don't have to make another trip in here."
Over the course of the next couple of weeks, I was reading about the TOGO C2 I mentioned in my last post. One day I get a call from parts lady letting me know that my handles have come in. That is where RV Dealer Trip 4 comes in and hence the story of the "Parts Guy" that wanted to charge $500 to do an hours work.
The end.
